Hey you guys, can you tell a newbie in this business what is the difference in these 2 Modems?  Besides the price I would like to know more.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

The 5101 is a cheaper reproduction of the 5100 that is vastly inferior. If your looking for a cheaper modem definitely go for the DCM315 its a better unit than the 5101 and its quite a bit cheaper and has the same features as the SB5100. The SB5101 is just now coming onto the scene due to price inflation and SB5100 supply shortages but its not a real good alternative product in my opinion as the firmware available for it is alpha quality at best, where as the DCM315, and SB4200 both have quality software options.

Thanks so much monkeywrencher, for your comment.  So you are saying to go with either the DCM315, or SB4200?

WRONG.

5101 has superior hardware (specifically the tuner) to the 5100
just try adding splitters the 5100s will stop working way before 5101 will

also superior firmware in my opinion...static ip helps a lot on european networks

Of course you prefer the 5101 raj, you wrote the only good firmware for it, but to be fair it is still in beta, and the 5100 is a great modem with good mature software. With the newest firmwares I have yet to hear of a SB5101 out performing a SB5100. Eventually the SB5101 will be a good product, but its not there yet in my opinion.

heh i have 2 5100e and one 5101e....the 5100es drop offline regularly while the 5101 runs awesome

the latest versions arent really beta anymore... infact they have less bugs than the sigma 142 which has memory leaks and other oddities...like try using putty as the telnet client on sigma...it will error out and any commands you run wont have any effect lol

i was only replying to the
"The 5101 is a cheaper reproduction of the 5100 that is vastly inferior." part

the 5101 uses better hardware than the 5100 Cheesy
