This tutorial written by Shifter shows a great way to tweak your connection to the max.

You may find that you don't always get advertised speeds (download/upload). This is largely due to the Operating System not being fully optimized for such transfers. However, you can tweak your settings to get the most from your connection. This works with either premod/rental modems. Follow the steps below.

Windows XP Cablenut Tweak

  • Click here to download a program named Cablenut.
  • Install the app. If you get to a point where it asks you to choose your operating system, select Windows 2000. It'll be just as XP.

  • Retrieve the Shifter Custom.ccs file that I have attached to this post and place it on your desktop.
  • Double click on the Cablenut icon from your desktop. A Cablenut folder will open. Within that folder you will see an icon titled "adjuster.exe". Double click on it.
  • A new window titled "Manual Tweak Screen (Windows 2000)" will open up. From the upper left hand corner, click on "File". From the drop-down menu, choose "Open Custom Settings File". A new window titled "Open" will appear. Browse to your desktop, select the "Shifter Custom.ccs" file and click open. All values will now be filled in.
  • You are now back to the main application screen. On the bottom right, you'll see a button titled "Save to Registry". Click it. You will receive a Warning message asking if you want to save these manual tweaks to your registry. Click OK. You are now being informed that the changes have been made successfully. Click OK.
  • Click "Done" to close the application and reboot your system. Check your speeds once you are back up.

Windows Vista TCP Tweak

Windows Vista has a self tuned RWIN, and it works fine. Microsoft hasn't realeased much info about specific TCP registry keys yet, but I've been testing some of the keys from Windows XP. Turned out the DefaultSendWindow also works with Vista.

The things you need to do if you have Vista and cant reach 90% of advertised speed, beside the points in this sticky are:

  • Make sure TCP autotuning is enabled by going to Start/Run and pasting this "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal" and hit Enter.
  • Download and install Cablenut from here.
  • Disable UAC by going to Start/Run and typing "msconfig". Click on the Tools tab, scroll down to "Disable UAC", click on it and then click Launch. Reboot your PC.
  • Download and unzip this upload tweak. Click on the .ccs file and click Save to Registry in adjuster.
    • If cablenut ask for a OS when you're trying to apply the settings, use Windows 2000.
  • Reboot your PC
  • Test speed again

Thank you to VanBuren over at TMN

This information is widely available at my other community TestMy.Net. Please keep in mind that TMN is not an uncapping community and is solely about gaining more speed by way of tweaking. If you visit the site, steer clear of any conversation regarding anything related to uncapping as it's not allowed.

If you choose to register a user-name, it would be great if you would prefix it with "Theoryshare_" (e.g. Theoryshare_user-name). This will allow me to identify Theoryshare members when they are looking for help over there on the main boards (as well as through personal messages).

The Shifter Custom.ccs file works great on a universal level, but the expert at designing .ccs files specifically for your connection is a guy who goes by the name of VanBuren. He is a fellow staff member of mine over at TMN and can create you a custom .ccs file upon request. As you can see from his sig, his speeds are unbelievable.

Well, I hope that this guide helps out in the speed department and many of you see improvements. Between both sites (TS & TMN) you will get results.
